Now that the warm weather is upon us, it’s tempting to spend all day outside. While this is a great way to get fresh air, soak in the Vitamin D, and have some fun, the sun’s harsh rays can damage your skin if you aren’t careful. While we strongly encourage everyone to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, it’s very important to protect your skin beforehand.
How does the sun damage my skin?
When you’re exposed to the sun and the UV index is 3 or higher, its rays start to damage your skin. In the short term, this might cause skin burns or tans (both of which are signs of damage). In the long term, you’ll be more likely to develop wrinkles, leathery skin, age spots, cataracts, and even skin cancer. While it might be easier to spend a day out in the sun without applying sunscreen, the long-term risks just aren’t worth it. Fortunately, sun damage is easy to prevent.
Using sunscreen to prevent damage
It turns out that your mom was right—sunscreen is a life-saver (literally). If you properly apply sunscreen with at least an SPF 30 rating, you’ll be protected against any harm from the sun’s rays. With that being said, the key word here is proper application. Make sure to use a liberal amount, reapply as directed on the bottle, and use a waterproof sunscreen before going swimming.
