As time goes by — Celebrating 20 years


It’s hard to believe, but this Friday June 15th we will be celebrating 20 years in business. It’s a very proud moment for me and our entire organization, and it gives me pause to look back and appreciate the wins and losses we’ve had along the way.

The last two decades have been a lot of fun, but I’d be lying if I said they’d been easy. It’s always been important to us that we continue to evolve, and that means trying a lot of new things without any guarantee of success. We’ve gone down a few paths that didn’t lead to a pot of gold. But we learned from each mistake.  Whether introducing new products and services or opening new locations, we’ve never shied away from giving something a try.

Over the years we’ve also had to deal with fires, floods, sewage backups, leaky rooves, power outages and computer malfunctions. In every case, our staff rallied together and our clients showed great patience.

Of course one of the biggest changes to our business and everyone else’s over the past 20 years has been the Internet. We’ve taken our spa menu online, introduced e-gift cards, expanded into online bookings and explored social media marketing, all of which has helped us better serve and communicate with our clients.

Naturally, that communication goes both ways. I have to say that online reviews have kept us on our toes. We’ve always made it a point to lean into reviews instead of backing away from them, encouraging our clients to give us real feedback, positive or negative. We have an impressive track record of positive online reviews, but as any business knows, there are bad days too. We learn from them and move on.

Ultimately good reviews win out, leading to great news we can share with our followers, as was the case recently. For the third consecutive year, we were notified by TripAdvisor that all four of our spas have won a Certificate of Excellence, with all of them rating in the top 10 spas in Ontario. We’re really proud of that.

Margins are small in the spa business, but we have always strived to deliver five-star spa experiences at a reasonable price. We’re also proud of the fact that we pay our people competitively and can say that our staff turnover is remarkably low. Many of our people have been with us for more than 15 years and have become dear friends.

Sadly, in 2015 we lost one of them to cancer. Lisa Mello began at Sanctuary as a esthetician and later became general manager of multiple locations. She was taken from us far too early, but we know she’s smiling down on us this week, with glass raised, saying cheers.

I have to say that wouldn’t be where we are today without our amazing staff. We have a dedicated team of some of the nicest people in the world and I consider myself lucky to work with them.

We also have the greatest clients in the world, who have shown us tremendous loyalty. To everyone who has supported Sanctuary over the past 20 years, a big thank-you. We love what we do, and we hope you’ve come to love it too.
